Sports Shirt Framing

How Can I Display a Sport Shirt Properly?

We’re often ask how they can display a treasured football, rugby or sports shirt without allowing it to become damaged, creased or visually lost inside a frame. The answer is

a professionally designed shadow-box frame, which gives the garment enough depth while presenting it as a feature piece rather than simply flattening it behind glass.

A common concern is whether a shirt can be framed without permanently altering it. In most cases, the garment can be carefully mounted using conservation-friendly methods that avoid unnecessary cutting, gluing or stretching. The shirt is shaped to show its most recognisable details, such as the club badge, player’s name, squad number or sponsor. Sleeves may be folded neatly, while the body is arranged to create a balanced, natural presentation.

Again, you may also ask whether the shirt should be framed with a photograph, ticket, medal or certificate. This can be an excellent solution, particularly for signed shirts or important match memorabilia. A discreet mount or separate compartment can keep supporting items visible without making the display appear overcrowded.

The depth of the frame is especially important. A standard photo frame may press against the fabric or leave insufficient room for the shirt’s folds. A deeper box frame allows the garment to sit safely away from the glazing and creates a professional three-dimensional appearance.

For shirts displayed in bright rooms, UV-protective glazing is worth considering. It can help reduce the risk of colours fading over time, while an anti-reflective option makes the shirt easier to view under indoor lighting.

Frame choice should complement the shirt. Black, white and metallic mouldings offer a modern sports feel, while wood finishes can create a warmer presentation.

The result is a secure, attractive display that protects the shirt while allowing its story to remain at the centre.
